Fort St. John Summer Activities Program
In the spring of 2002, I was offered
an oppurtunity to be a major sponsor of this program
for the kids. One of the biggest reasons I was
one of the first to take on this, is for the kids.
When this program originally started here in Fort
St. John, I as a youngster was in one of the first
week sessions. I will never forget the fun we
had, a group of kids from all different parts of town,
given a one week oppurtunity to see all the city had
to offer us. After several benefit barbeques,
visits to the participating school, I was elected
president by the board. I knew being a sponsor
would offer a small amount, being president would
truly be the way to ensure our local kids have the
time they deserve. The program is flourishing,
we as the board are constantly coming up with new
ideas.
Association For Community Living
The Fort St. John Association for
Community Living was incorporated on January 23, 1960,
opening the first school for the handicapped in this
area. This school was called Northside School
and it was taken into the local school district in
September 1977. In 1996, three individuals moved
to Fort St. John from Victoria as a result of the
closure of the Glendale Institute. Their families
live in this district and to-date these clients are
residing in the old Skills residence, renamed 10th
Avenue House which is now home to four adult individuals.
In July of 1987, the Association received
funding for a self-help Life Skills program.
This was to assist people with a developmental disability
to further develop their abilities and independence
in day-to-day living. This program is now titled
Community Connections, which provides community access,
supported independent living and life skills training,
such as budgeting, cooking, laundry and housekeeping.
